“Minister Announces Reo-opening dates with Health Measures”

Higher Education Minister Dr. Brian Mushimba announced the re-opening of Higher Learning Institutions and Colleges which were closed due to the COVID – 19 pandemic, after wide multi sectoral consultations.

Universities with examination and graduating classes commence their academic calendar on 8th June, 2020 and subsequently Colleges on 1st July, 2020.

Dr. Mushimba said the reopening would be implemented in a cautious – phased approach based on preparedness of the Institutions.

“Following His Excellency the President of the Republic of Zambia Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu’s directive to undertake consultations on possible reopening of Universities and Colleges, the Ministry consulted widely in a multi sectoral approach to review and assess the reopening of institutions”. Dr. Mushimba said.

He said institutions would open while adhering to health guidelines established to ensure the safety of the learner’s.

Minister Mushimba emphasized that the E- Learning platform would continue being an integral part of the learning process for both graduating students and those in other years within the training calendar.

Dr. Mushimba, further said graduating students would have a blend of both online and physical class sessions to enable social media distancing whilst at respective TEVET Colleges and universities as one of the preventative measures.

Dr. Mushimba said the examinations that were scheduled for April/May would be held on 27th July to 7th August 2020.

Dr. Mushimba believed the Ministry would remain steadfast and not operate in isolation during this much needed time of collective efforts to combat the pandemic COVID -19 but consult and collaborate.

“The Ministry will continue to work with other stakeholders and other Government Ministries as such Ministry of Health, Ministry of Local Government and the Provincial Administration” said Dr. Mushimba.

The Minister hosted the press briefing on (5th June, 2020) with his PS, Kayula Siame in a joint briefing joined by Information and Broadcasting PS Amos Malupenga, General Education PS – Admininstartion Dr. Jabbin Mulwanda, and DMMU Coordinator Chanda Kabwe and other government officials.
