Higher Education Permanent Secretary Kayula Siame commended the Copperbelt University and management for developing a plan reflecting excellence of research and industrialization especially focusing on the importance of the economic growth of the country in the higher education sector.
Mrs. Siame said industrialization must remain key alongside the outlined plan strategic goals, she put an emphasis on CBU to consistently monitor the strategic plan as it is being implemented bearing in mind the value of contributions towards higher education.
PS Siame expressed happiness that the plan will be key in fostering and achieving the 7th NDP 2030 as reflected in the content of the document.
Mrs. Siame called for collective efforts from the University management and staff to realise goals as planned.
She commended the Vice Chancellor, and the team embarking on a plan that draws a distinction and providing strength and direction based on lessons learnt from the past plan, she encouraged the management to remain on course and actualise a brand of excellence and steer the new plan to fruition.
Mrs. Siame was speaking today (12th November, 2020) when she launched the Copperbelt University Strategic Plan in Kitwe.
Giving a presentation, Copperbelt University Vice Chancellor Professor Naison Ngoma said despite challenges the University can not depend on Government grant but find other avenues to supplement it’s academia operations.
Professor Ngoma said among many activities scored, CBU embarked on research publications, infrastructure enhancement of additional laboratories, office space, catering facilities, and equally expansion in the setting up of business activities.
Professor Ngoma said the University has also spread education consequently seating Kapasa Makasa University, Micheal Chilufya Sata School of medicine under it’s care, Professor Ngoma added that the University is running satellite campuses in Solwezi and Lusaka.
Professor Ngoma indicated that in the new 2020 plan way forward, the University will grow and enhance research and industrialization by being relevant in many economical areas.
He said the University has embarked on the creation of an incubation and innovation hub responding to various economic activities.
Professor Ngoma disclosed that the University’s (CBU) goal boarders on establishment of expansion of establishing, a plant of propagation, computer assembly, solar plant, housing units. He said the 3,200 hectares land in Kawambwa is planned for game ranching.
He called on the staff to remain dedicated towards work and support the strategic plan that which he likened to the “Rotarian” spirit of good will and action oriented.
Earlier Professor Ngoma explained that
the past 2014 to 2018 plan lagged in some areas of academia activities experiencing weaknesses in the infrastructure, financial, decentralisation, and relatively poor customer relations affecting the branding.
He, however, said currently the University recorded enhancement of cordial cooperation relations and high opportunities with industry and the corporate world.
And Copperbelt University Chancellor Professor Muyunda Mwanalushi said the University has more critical mass to use on the plan based on a pivotal role through excellence, research, innovation and industrialization.
He applauded the University and management for coming up with such a strategic plan and urged everyone to work based on the 7 outlined goals in the document.
